Translating movie titles in writing?
Hey, guys. I'm doing some writing about Hindi films for an audience who I can't assume has any prior knowledge of the topic or of the language, and I'm running into a bit of a problem. I'm trying to give a brief translation of the movie titles just in parentheses, but I don't really know what to do when the movie title is just the name of a character. Is there some kind of set protocol for what to do in this case? I'm not sure how much space each movie I'm mentioning is going to get. russian postcard
Hey all, I want to send a postcard to the parents of a friend of mine, which I stayed with for two weeks over the summer. Could someone correct my spelling/grammar mistakes and maybe point out what would be hard to understand?! Thank you! Здраствуйте, Много приветов из моего родины, Кливленд. Я здесь во время каникул у мамы (она очень нравится платок, спосибо) и мои браты. С рождеством и новым годом! |

Racquetball?
So I feel like this might be a dumb question, but I haven't lived in Austin for very long... I broke my racquetball racquet yesterday and I need to buy a new one. Where can I get a new, quality racquet? (not the $20 ones you get at Academy) I would just order off the internet but I would like to try out the racquet before I buy it... |

teachers?
hello everyone. i'm a native texan who has lived in NYC for the past 4.5 years. due to some family stuff lately, plus a giant love for the awesomeness that is HEB (ha, i'm serious!), i'm starting to seriously look into a move to the austin area. i'm finishing up work on my masters in childhood ed, and will have it and my new york state teacher certification in may. i did my undergrad work at a texas university. SO! i'm wondering if there are any austin-area teachers in here who can shed some light on how it looks job-wise right now. i know it's tough pretty much everywhere (they're not even accepting applications in nyc, sheesh), so i'm realistic. i've only just started exploring this, so any advice you've got, websites to check out, etc would be welcome. plus, if anyone has come into teaching in texas with certification from a different state, i'd love to hear your experience as well. i'm open to austin and any of it's suburbs for an elementary school position. i'm really looking forward to finally coming back home. =) oh, and sonic. i've really missed sonic, too. |

Quick Japanese translation help!
This one Japanese person has the link to my website on his link list, and now as the URL has changed, I would like to inform him about it ^^ The problem is, I don't know Japanese too well (i only know some words / sentences)... The message should be something like this: "Hello! The address to my website has changed. Could you please update the link? The new address is: *my website's URL*. Thank you!" I would be very grateful if someone could help me :) |

Helmets
So due to some non-accident related damage, I need to go buy a new motorcycle helmet. Sadly, the shop I bought my original gear from has closed, as has the shop near my home. Anyone have a recommendation on where to find a reasonable variety of helmets at non-exorbitant prices? |

hair pie
Here is what I need: A hair stylist (cut and color, please) who can do actual edgy, hipster haircuts and will not look at me funny and try to talk me out of asymmetry, or platinum blonde or whatever other wanky bullshit I decide I want. It would also be awesome if they were thoughtful and arty and might be able to make good suggestions about a new cut. I will bring in pictures of what I think I want, but I've had the same asymmetrical bob-thing for a while, and I am pretty tired of it and my hair is getting to be too long for it. I have very wavy, very thick hair that takes a long time to cut and highlight (stylists never believe me when I tell them they will probably need three hours) so I need someone hip, competent and very patient. Cost is not really an issue, since I would love to not have to go to someone else to pay to fix a cheap haircut. I don't care where they're located, so long as it's south of Waco and north of Brownsville. I would like a name, not a general salon recommendation. That has failed me several times, as I typically walk out of the place looking like a newscaster, not a rock star. I hate that. My life is fairly boring, and having cool hair is pretty exciting. |

Algerian Arabic
Hi all~ I've had this groovy song for years, but I have no idea what the lyrics mean. It's essentially one verse repeated over and over again. It's part Algerian Arabic and French - I think the French means, "Me and you, western woman, I'm sick of this", but I am not educated on Arabic. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Z_Lcs57vSMMerci^^ Current Music: Abdel Ali Slimani |

Mexican restaurant recommendation!
If you haven't been to Azul Tequila, I would highly suggest you give them a try. I just got back from having dinner there, and I fell in love with the place. The menu is half authentic interior mexican, half tex mex (which is always a great combination of choices in my book). I had the sopa de tortilla, and it tasted like I was eating homemade soup. The servers were all very attentive as well, which is a plus. My roommate and I loved the atmosphere and the food, and we just wanted to share this place with other Austinites! They're located by the Target off 290 and Lamar. http://www.azultequila.com/index.php4211 South Lamar Blvd. Austin, TX 78704 |

SWEATY DANCING
Hi Austin, So, I'm looking for some good, sweaty dance nights. I grew up here, moved away for college (booo), and I'm back in town with a bunch of friends from school/I've realized that because I haven't lived here since turning 21, my knowledge of the nightlife is nonexistant. I think the last time I went dancing in Austin was when I saw the Faint + TV on the Radio at the Austin Music Hall roughly five years ago. Ha. I've been poking around on the nets and it looks like TCs Lounge is up our alley...we definitely like us some good funk/soul music. and food. But I'd like some other suggestions. We're here until next Monday. My friends are all New England natives who've never been further south than DC, and I want to show them how it's done down here (and I want to be further convinced to move back here as soon as my lease is up in Boston). Thank you! |

New Year's Eve for CHEAP
Hey everyone, I looked several pages back and hadn't seen a post about New Year's Eve, so forgive me if something similar has been posted already. My friends and I want to go out on New Year's Eve but every place we've looked at is charging around $50 cover. Does anyone know of any good parties happening on New Year's Eve for $20 or less cover? Or is this a pipe dream? We may just have a house party if everywhere around town is charging extravagant covers. Thanks! |

ISO firewood
Hey all- I'm looking for firewood. A place on the side of the road that is selling piles of it would suffice; has anyone SEEN anyone selling any? I don't want the $3.50/bundle wood from HEB or other retail outlets; I'm looking for the yahoo on the side of the road selling it $10 for a stack of it. Please only respond if you've laid eyes, personally, on someone selling it in the last day or so; I don't really want to run all around town on a wild goose chase. TIA~ |

Hope you get everything you want. Love, N." Thank's in advance! |

Lingerie and Movie Seats
Is there a store in Austin that sells nice lingerie that isn't just the generic cheap stuff that can be found on every website on the internet? You know, the kind of stuff that they have at Cindie's/Le Rouge/etc. It's been a while since I've been to Tabu, but I remember that same type of stuff last time I went. And I've seen a store called Underwear on Lamar, but I can't find anything about it online. Anyone ever been or know of another place other than Victoria's Secret and Fredericks? Also, we're redecorating and selling our authentic movie theater seats for $50. They are pretty nice, they maybe just need a light dusting. Anyone interested? ( Picture under the cut ) |

Armenian etymology question
Hello fellow Linguaphiles, I was told that the Armenian for thank you was shnorhakalutyun (transcribed), and that perhaps it was a loanword or something like that. Does anyone know its etymology and what it means literally in the language it was presumably borrowed from? |
